Many of the names Paolini has used originate from Old Norse, German, Old English, and Russian sources, as well as the invented languages. 'One of the most memorable YA books I've ever read. Vikki lives in the Adelaide foothills with her family. Her new novel, Inbetween Days, will be published in October 2015. Among other awards, it was shortlisted for the prestigious Prime Minister's Awards, 2013. Friday Brown was also an Honour Book, Children's Book Council of Australia, 2013. Vikki Wakefield's first young adult novel, All I Ever Wanted, won the 2012 Adelaide Festival Literary Award for Young Adult Fiction, as did her second novel, Friday Brown, in 2014. Why is the boy she sent Valentines to for years now suddenly a creep?Īnd who is the mysterious girl next door who moans at night? Why is the monster dog Gargoyle hidden in the back shed? And she can't seem to find answers to all the new questions: Does this make her a drug runner? She's set herself rules to live by, but she's starting to break them. Her two older brothers are in prison, so now Mim has to retrieve a lost package for her mother. Anywhere but home-in a dead suburb and with a mother who won't get off the couch. Mim knows what she wants, and where she wants to go. Rule number one: I will not turn out like my mother. In the end, the same things look entirely different. Over the nine days before her seventeenth birthday, Mim's life turns upside down. Winner of the Adelaide Festival Literary Award for Young Adult Fiction, 2012. Diabolical Mastermind: Hennessey is the ringleader of a nationwide human trafficking network which specializes in forced prostitution, hemophagia, and anthropophagy. On top of all this, Oliver intends to take credit for a reduced crime rate in Ohio, using his position as a springboard for the US Presidency. Corrupt Politician: Governor Ethan Oliver has frequented Hennessey's brothels to rape women, used his position as Governor of Ohio to cover up the disappearances of Hennessey's victims, and tries to blow up a hospital to eliminate any witnesses. Broken Pedestal: When Cat learns that Hennessey's business partner was none other than Governor Ethan Oliver, she is dismayed, having previously voted for him. When Cat is targeted by a vampire gangster, she and Bones uncover a horrific conspiracy. Halfway to the Grave is the first novel in the Night Huntress series.Ĭatherine "Cat" Crawfield has made a clandestine career out of hunting vampires, hoping to gain the approval of her mother, who resents her for being the spawn of a vampire who raped her, by finding and killing her father.Ĭat eventually catches the eye of Crispin "Bones" Russell III, with whom she enters an agreement whereby she trains with Bones to become a more formidable combatant, and Cat finds herself questioning if vampires are inherently evil. The way Sadie and Carter have to learn magic and the fact that their family is a strong old powerful family was great. I liked the crush that Carter had, though it didn't exactly turn out like I'd expected. The siblings don't just stay in one place but travel everywhere. The author did a great job with all of the characters and settings. Carter and Sadie couldn't be more different but it was their differences that made them so perfect for the story. The two narrators did a great job with the voices and I got completely into the book. I have to say, I think the cat is my favorite character. Now to save their father, they have to battle with magic and save the world! They learned that magic is real, their father was a magician and the 'gods' they learned about are real. On one of the rare occasions they do see each other, they find out a LOT more about their family than they ever thought existed. Carter and Sadie are siblings that look nothing alike and rarely spend any time even on the same continent. I absolutely loved this audiobook! I got it for my kids to listen to and I think I liked it more than they did. Note: Poirot's method of travel is not explained in every one of his stories. He travels by boat in the short story "Problem at Sea"Īnd in the novel Death on the Nile. Plane travel is (obviously) seen in Death in the Clouds, when Poirot investigates a murder that happened during flight. Train bleu in The Mystery of the Blue Train and the train of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits in the classic story Murder on the Orient Express. His modes of transportation consisted of travel by train, airplane, or boat. Most of the cases that took place abroad are featured in stories from the 1930s. Most of these trips were meant to be for pleasure these trips take him to the European continent and the MiddleĮast. We encounter Hercule Poirot outside of England on several occasions. The third begins with: ‘ Ogni dolcezza: All sweetness’. This sonetto has three parts: in the first I say how my lady fulfils what is potential in actuality through that most noble part, her eyes: and in the third I say how she does the same through that most noble part, her mouth: and between these two parts is a brief part, which is almost a demand for help from the preceding and following parts, and begins with: ‘ Aiutatemi, donne: Help me, ladies’. Where she passes, all men turn their look on her,Īnd she makes the heart tremble in him she greets,Īre born in the heart of him who hears her speak, And then I wrote this sonetto, which begins: ‘ Ne li occhi porta’.īy which she makes noble what she gazes on: XXVIII What he will say concerning the death of BeatriceĪfter I had treated of Love in the above verse, I had the will to desire to write again, in praise of this so graceful lady, in which I would show how Love is wakened through her, and not only wakened where he is sleeping, but where he potentially is not, she, working miraculously, making him come to be.XXV His justification of his personification of Love.XXIII Dante’s vision of Beatrice’s death.
